Batteries Plus
The Intersection of Data and Merchandising

Cameron McDonald
Driving Smarter Decisions in Retail
In 2025, the retail industry is undergoing a seismic transformation, driven by the increasing availability of big data and advancements in business intelligence tools. As a merchandising leader, I’ve witnessed firsthand how pairing data with strategic decision-making can revolutionize the way retailers approach inventory, product selection and customer satisfaction. In today’s competitive landscape, it’s not just about stocking shelves—it’s about making informed, data-driven decisions that benefit both the business and the customer.
Leveraging Business Intelligence for Smarter Merchandising
At Batteries Plus, we’ve placed business intelligence at the heart of our merchandising efforts. This integration has been a game-changer. By building our merchandising strategies on a foundation of robust data, we can quantify SKU and category performance with greater precision than ever before.
For example, we analyze how specific items perform across different seasons and regions, identifying geographic trends that inform our inventory decisions. This allows us to optimize our assortment by stocking the right products in the right locations at the right time. Additionally, data helps us estimate inventory costs, leading to more accurate budget allocations and improved store profitability.
But the benefits don’t stop there. With data-driven insights, we’ve streamlined our conversations with vendors. By understanding which products truly resonate with our customers, we can make smarter endorsement choices and negotiate more effectively. It’s not just about asking questions of the data—it’s about knowing the right questions to ask.
Integrating Data Across Functions
To make the most of these insights, it’s essential to integrate data collection systems across various functions of the business. At Batteries Plus, we’ve developed dashboards and tools that provide a holistic view of our operations, enabling our merchandising team to make cohesive, informed decisions.
For retailers that don’t yet have a dedicated data function, partnering with analytics teams or investing in artificial intelligence tools can provide a significant edge. AI and machine learning models can help identify emerging trends, predict customer preferences and enhance decision-making. In an era where trends shift rapidly, keeping an ear to the ground and staying ahead of the curve is critical.
Developing Talent for a New Era
While technology is a powerful enabler, it’s the people behind the data who truly drive success. At Batteries Plus, we’ve embraced a “one merchant” strategy, where our team members are skilled in both category and product management. This holistic approach ensures that each merchant takes end-to-end ownership of their category, from sourcing to marketing.
“By leveraging business intelligence, fostering collaboration and staying true to our purpose, we can continue to meet the evolving needs of our customers while driving meaningful growth”
This cohesive ownership has strengthened collaboration across departments, particularly between merchandising and marketing. By aligning goals and sharing insights, we’ve been able to create unified plans that drive traffic and sales. For example, our marketing team uses data from store purchases to craft campaigns that resonate with customers, ensuring that the right products are promoted at the right time.
Equally important is maintaining a close connection to the customer. We encourage our merchants to spend time in stores, listening to feedback from both store managers and shoppers. This hands-on approach allows us to react quickly to customer needs and source products that meet their demands. In our niche business, hearing what customers are asking for—and delivering on those requests—is how we build for the future.
Thinking Outside the Box to Drive Traffic
Retailers today must think creatively to attract and retain customers. At Batteries Plus, we’ve explored innovative programs that align with our business values while driving traffic to our stores. For example, we’ve built a relationship with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Green Bay Packers to drive awareness to a program that provides customers with a convenient way to responsibly dispose of batteries and other items. This initiative reinforces our commitment to creating a domestic supply chain of critical materials found in the everyday batteries and devices of our customers. On top of that, this initiative also educates consumers on the importance of the life cycle of a battery, often leading to additional purchases during their visit to dispose of used batteries.
Community impact programs have also played a significant role in connecting with our customers on a deeper level. Through partnerships like Toys for Tots, we’ve demonstrated that retail can be about more than just transactions—it can be about purpose. By engaging with our communities in meaningful ways, we’ve fostered loyalty and differentiation that big-box retailers can’t replicate.
Building a Purpose-Driven Brand
As we look ahead, the intersection of purpose and performance will continue to define retail success. Brands that align their business strategies with their values—whether through sustainability, community impact, or customer engagement— will be better positioned to thrive in an increasingly conscious consumer market.
At Batteries Plus, we’ve embraced this philosophy by empowering our associates to be ambassadors of our brand’s greater purpose. Through their efforts, we’re able to create a ripple effect of positive impact, driving both sales and success.
In 2025 and beyond, the key to thriving in retail will be balancing the art of merchandising with the science of data. By leveraging business intelligence, fostering collaboration and staying true to our purpose, we can continue to meet the evolving needs of our customers while driving meaningful growth.
